January 20, 2010 - Walmart and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) are reminding high school seniors planning to attend college in the Fall of 2010 to submit their application for this year’s scholarship before the January 31 deadline. An online application, along with additional educational resources and information, can be found at www.hsf.net/walmartscholarship.aspx.
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF)/Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. High School Scholarship is available on a competitive basis to graduating high school seniors of Hispanic heritage in select locations. Students must be enrolled full-time as first-year freshmen during the 2010-2011 academic year. Awards are in the amount of $2,500.
“The tough economy should not keep any student from the long-term investment of a college education,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “We hope this scholarship will give more students access to quality higher education because we see the value it has for both the individual and our community as a whole.”
Walmart shares HSF’s commitment to advancement through education and has been a financial supporter and partner of HSF since 2006.
“Walmart is remarkably successful in business and strategic in its investments, which, thanks to their Foundation, includes a very real and significant commitment to Latino Higher Education. Thanks to partners like Walmart, in 2009 we awarded in excess of $28 million in scholarships to over 4,600 students,” said Frank. D. Alvarez, president and chief executive officer of HSF. “Our goal is to put a college degree in every Latino household in America and we believe we will accomplish this objective with the support of companies like Walmart who have continued their wonderful collaboration, even in the midst of a tougher economic climate.”
Eligible scholarship cities include: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/Twin Cities, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
