Former Girard Estates Building Built in 1828 Now Luxury Rental Development

New York, NY - December 15, 2009 - BRP Companies today announced that the restoration is complete and leasing is now open at The Old City Mercantile building, a luxury rental development building located in The Old City historic district on N. Front Street.

The Old City Mercantile is the unparalleled restoration of the group of six historic Greek Revival Style buildings known as the Girard Estate.  Located at 20-30 N. Front Street, the buildings were originally constructed between 1828 and 1834 by the estate of Stephen Girard.

The Old City Mercantile was awarded historic tax credits and included collaboration with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission as well as the National Parks Service. BLT Architects served as Architect of Record leading the building’s complete restoration, maintaining its original façade and other historic touches while updating the entire infrastructure and transforming the property into a truly modern, luxury residential building. Additional local firms included Clemens Construction as the General Contractor and Robert Powers & Associates as Historic Consultants.

Rentals are available for immediate occupancy at this 5-story, 35 unit building.  The units range in size from 723 square feet to 2,413 square feet and in price from $1,300 - $3,900 per month for one, two and three bedroom homes. “We are very excited to open the leasing process for The Old City Mercantile,” said Geoff Flournoy, principal of BRP Companies.  “Working with this historic structure gave us the opportunity to offer unique features and layouts that are uncommon in typical urban residential developments.”

Financing for The Old City Mercantile project was provided by the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group and Wachovia Bank.

Each unit at The Old City Mercantile features maple hardwood flooring, stone countertops and custom hardwood cabinetry, and is equipped with GE profile stainless steel appliances and Kohler bathtubs. Several units include private roof decks and balconies with spectacular views of the Delaware River, Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the Center City skyline. Residents will also enjoy a elegantly landscaped common courtyard.

The Old City Mercantile is located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City district, which was the center of Colonial Philadelphia and the original hub of political, commercial, social and religious life in the port city.  It is within walking distance to historic attractions such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell Center, and Philadelphia’s Penn Station, as well as art galleries, clothing boutiques, restaurants, bars and entertainment.
