Would You Like Fries With That Dress?

Friday the 13th, a historically unlucky day, is affecting more than movie sales these days. It’s also welcoming the fashion world into a grim realization of the recession.
Today’s New York Post reports abysmal effects to the fashions industry’s once extravagant Fashion Week Productions. Usual upscale sponsors have been replaced with French fries hawking McDonalds and free lube samples in a slightly comical yet kind of depressing turn. Advertisers are hoping to cash in on the markets affordability of ads, and of designers desperation for sponsorship. With shows moving out of Bryant park, after parties being cancelled and designers scaling down grandiose couture, it’s no surprise that luxury sponsorships have fallen on the back burner as well. Even the usual Marc Jacobs circus that entails has Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs International saying: “This is not the time for extravaganzas. This is just a time for everybody to mind their p’s and q’s.”- WWD 2/2/09
