Internet Week Comes to New York

I attended the Thrillist Information Super Party last night at Hiro; it was one of many events to celebrate “Internet Week,” a new week-long affair that has been described as “a greatly delayed digital debutante ball for the super geek.” I love it! You can read some coverage of the kick-off, which happened on Tuesday, in the New York Times, New York 1 and CNET.com. More on Internet Week NY here.
I’m a big fan of Thrillist and I’m a big fan of the group that organized Internet Week - The Webby Awards, “the Oscars of the Internet,” - which was my client for several years when I worked at MKPR, and is now in its 12th year. Their annual awards show is next Tuesday and will fete the best in digital from around the world.
I remember the original Internet Week too; the last of those that I attended was in 2000 and it was right around the time of the Internet bust. I was working at a now-defunct internet heavy PR firm, which employed more than 500 people in 5 offices, and lost 70% of its clientele between Thanksgiving and Christmas of that year. Crazy times. I guess it’s both good and bad that things have corporatized so much. But it’s still a sight to see all the geeks in one room hanging out and drinking rootbeer vodka floats. Who could have predicted that?
