Monday’s News

by admin ~ January 7, 2008

It’s the “official” first week of 2008, since last week was basically a wash, and there’s a bunch of interesting news out today.

 - WSJ reports that McDonalds is taking on Starbucks by adding coffee bars in 14,000 locations nationwide.  When I was in Argentina in July, the McDonalds “McCafe” was the *only place I could find “take out” coffee, so I went there sometimes in the morning on the way to class and have to admit that it was actually really really good.  I imagine that it will fare well here too.

- Also in WSJ, an interesting advertising story about the new slogan marketers are pushing for Vegas, “Your Vegas is Showing.”  Is it just me or does this *really not have the same ring as “What Happens Here Stays Here”?  I guess they are going for a new audience that is not so much interested in partying and debauchery, which I get, but I predict now that this won’t really take off.

- The New York Times’ advertising story about 1-800-Flowers.com goes into their new marketing campaign involving online videos and a partnership with YouTube.  This is pretty brilliant.
